ABOUT US

White Space Art Asia is a Singapore-based contemporary art platform dedicated to promoting Asian artists and fostering meaningful engagement between artists, collectors, institutions, and the wider public. Founded 42 years ago, the gallery has built a longstanding reputation for discovering, nurturing, and championing both emerging and established artists across East and Southeast Asia.

The gallery takes its name from the philosophy of the celebrated Qing dynasty painter, Shitao, who wrote that a single brushstroke could define what lies beyond the borders of the universe. In Chinese aesthetics, the blank space is never empty; it is a realm of infinite possibility. Inspired by this philosophy, White Space Art Asia strives to be the ‘blank space’ in which artists can develop their practice, challenge conventions, and engage audiences through meaningful dialogue..

A defining characteristic of its program is its dual curatorial approach, developed in response to the distinct cultural landscapes of Asia.

The first centres on East Asia, with particular emphasis on China and Japan. Drawing upon over four decades of engagement with the region, it explores contemporary artistic practices through the lens of cultural heritage, philosophical traditions, and evolving social identities. Alongside established masters, White Space Art Asia continues to introduce emerging voices whose works contribute to the ongoing narrative of East Asian contemporary art.

The second curatorial practice focuses on Southeast Asia, highlighting the region’s diversity, vitality, and critical perspectives. It examines the intersections between Southeast Asian artistic expression and global art histories, fostering dialogue between artists across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Through this exchange, the gallery seeks to encourage new conversations on identity, memory, history, and the evolving language of contemporary art.

Together, these two curatorial streams enable White Space Art Asia to present nuanced, research-driven exhibitions that reflect the breadth, complexity, and interconnectedness of contemporary Asian art, while building lasting relationships between artists, collectors, and institutions.

Headquartered in the bohemian heritage district of Tiong Bahru, White Space Art Asia continues to serve as a platform for contemporary Asian art through exhibitions, art fairs, publications, and international collaborations.
