Yoga Bobo
Description

Yoga Bobo’s practice is grounded in the tension between structure and freedom. Hissignature grids function simultaneously as systems of order and metaphors for the social, cultural, and economic structures that shape individual experience. Emerging from a personalsense of being “boxed in” by his background and circumstances, the grid become a meansthrough which constraint is not simply represented, but actively examined and transformed.

At first glance, the repetitive geometry of Yoga Bobo’s compositions suggests discipline, confinement, and control. Each cell appears to occupy a predetermined space within a largersystem. Yet within these seemingly rigid boundaries, Yoga Bobo introduces an extraordinaryrange of imagery: figures, symbols, fragments of photographs, drawings, signs, and imaginedforms. Each compartment becomes an autonomous space of possibility, revealing a tensionbetween the imposed order of the whole and the freedom contained within its individualparts.

This interplay is central to Yoga Bobo’s practice. Rather than rejecting limitation, he worksthrough it, transforming the grid into a framework for negotiation and self-expression.Repetition becomes a means to visualise his experiences, while variation within the repeatedstructure suggests the constantly shifting nature of identity. The grid may contain the image, but it cannot determine its meaning.

Working across mixed media, Yoga Bobo draws upon memory, imagination, popularimagery, and personal experience to construct visual worlds that are at once meticulouslyordered and psychologically expansive. His works ultimately suggest that freedom does notalways require the destruction of boundaries; it can emerge through the ability to reinterpret, inhabit, and reshape them. In this sense, the grid becomes not a symbol of confinement alone, but a space in which restriction itself can be transformed into creative possibility.
